SEPTEMBER 2002 BROADSHEET - Annual Garden Party
Our social highlight of the year was blest with a blissfully warm and sunny evening at Jesus College. Nearly a hundred members and guests gathered in the Orchard in the college grounds on Tuesday 6th August and had a most enjoyable time. Our guest from the Sorbonne in Paris gave us an entertaining insight into the effect of the introduction of the Euro on l'homme sur le boulevard. Being a professor of English literature, specialising in Shakespeare, Paul-Gabrielle Boucé illustrated his talk with many a gallic shrug and wondered why we were making such a fuss about it. His talk was followed by a very welcome gift from NatWest, presented by Valerie Dring, Business Manager, in the form of a cheque for £1000, double their usual offering in recognition of ten years of the Club's existence.
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Club's foundation we are holding a dinner at Wolfson College on Wednesday 30th October. Our distinguished guest is Sir Fred Catherwood, a leading industrialist who spearheaded Britain's efforts to export into Europe and was our region's MEP for 15 years. He was very influential in encouraging people to 'Think Europe' as the EU was formed in 1992.
Invitations will be sent next month.
The Club is very fortunate in benefiting from the sponsorship of the following organisations:-
There are also other companies who give us generous help with specific meetings and services.
