Walter Herriot OBE - President

Walter was the Managing Director of St John’s Innovation Centre Ltd for 18 years until his retirement in November 2008. The Innovation Centre is regarded as a model for incubators, particularly those linked to Universities.  In 1999 Walter was awarded an OBE for services to businesses in the East of England and in 2002 was the Cambridge Evening News "Businessman of the Year".  In 2006 he received the Queens Award for Enterprise Promotion and was appointed Visiting Professor at the University of Hertfordshire. In 2008 Walter received an honorary doctorate from Anglia Ruskin University. In 2010 Walter received an award from the Cambridge News for his outstanding contribution to the business community. His Consultancy, Herriot Associates works with EEDA, UEA ARU, the University of Cambridge and private sector businesses.

 

Guy Mulley - Chairman

Guy was elected Chairman in 2009, having been a committee member for ten years (during part of which he was Honorary Secretary). Guy's career has spanned the Civil Service, the City and, in particular, the consultancy world, where he has worked for international organisations such as Ernst & Young and Deloittes, as well as local organisations such as N W Brown Group and Price Bailey LLP. Guy currently heads up the Employer Consulting Group, which advises employers on matters such as employee reward, employee share schemes, employment tax, employee benefits and HR consulting. In his spare time, when not playing sport, Guy has been involved in local initiatives such as the rescue of Cambridge Rugby Club and fund-raising work for Addenbrooke's Hospital.  Guy is also in the final stages of a Masters Degree in management science, where his thesis topic is employee reward.  

 

Chris Moore – Vice Chairman

Chris is a R&D Specialist with UK Trade & Investment. He works with multinationals assisting these companies to invest in UK Research & Development in the IT, Electronics and Communications sector. Prior to this role he was Director of External Alliances at Kodak European Research in Cambridge and has more than 25 years’ experience in industry, working in research, R & D, manufacturing and marketing. His expertise covers knowledge transfer, open innovation, technology scouting, intellectual property assessment, engagement with early-stage companies and the VC community and developing routes to market. He holds a PhD in Chemistry and has been responsible for 24 patents and more than 10 publications.

 

Nigel O’Dea Honorary Secretary

Nigel is an industrial marketing specialist, who has worked primarily in engineering plastics and composites over the last 25 years, doing a variety of international sales and marketing management roles for major multinationals such as DSM Engineering Plastics, GE Plastics and Scott Bader.  Nigel left Scott Bader in 2009 and founded Outsourcing B2B Marketing, (www.outsourcingb2bmarketing.com), an industrial and technology marketing and publicity business, based in Northants, aimed at helping SMEs and technology start ups.  Nigel has a BSc. (hons) degree in Materials Science & Management and a marketing diploma from The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM).

 

Steve Sheppard – Honorary Treasurer

Steve is a Finance Director experienced in manufacturing and high growth technical businesses. He is a Chartered Accountant with a BA in Economics from Exeter University. He spent most of his career in financial roles in the chemical and engineering industries with International Flavours & Fragrances, Scott Bader and Emerson Electric. In 2005 he became involved through interim and portfolio CFO roles with the Cambridge hi-tech sector, including companies in the telecoms and renewable energy sectors such as ip.access, HelioDynamics, Innova Wireless and Zinwave. In 2008 Steve joined Megahertz Broadcast Systems, a systems integrator specialising in the design, construction and installation of media systems as CFO.

 

Tim Eyre Membership Secretary

Tim is a telecommunications professional. Having obtained a degree in electrical engineering and an MSc in operational research from Imperial College, he joined BT (British Telecom) in 1970. He was seconded to the ITU (International Telecommunications Union), based in Geneva, and worked overseas in Nigeria, Brazil, Jordan and many parts of Africa. In 1982 he returned to the UK as BT’s first International Relations Manager for Africa, followed by Middle East Manager and then appointed BT’s Regional Director for Africa, the Middle East and Southern Asia. In 1994 Tim joined the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation (CTO) as the Programme Director running over 250 training and consultancy projects in the British Commonwealth. In 2006 he formed Business Simulation Training Limited to undertake commercial training for managers moving from the public to the private sector; he is currently a mentor for MBA students at Anglia Ruskin University and a consultant with Mobile Market Development Ltd.

 

John Batten - Press Officer

Originally a Chartered Accountant with Deloitte in London and Durban, John preferred commerce to the profession. He has worked for Philips, Sheraton Hotels, Thomas Cook where he was a Director of the Financial Services [Travellers Cheques and FX] Company and Midland Bank as Head of Plastic Card Strategy where he helped develop SWITCH and the then new eftpos service in retail. Aged 45 he became an entrepreneur starting Transmo Ltd, a smart card business, and selling it to an Australian plc in 2000.  Since then he has been a Cambridge University Entrepreneur starting up companies and then with Business Link, turning around companies. He has been involved with CETC since 1997 and now is responsible for marketing and sponsorship.

 

Barry Butler – Web Master

Barry Butler is a Chartered Engineer and Physicist, a PRINCE2 Practitioner, holds an MBA from Warwick Business School and has published 19 co-authored scientific papers, presented at 7 conferences and twice been a visiting lecturer at Surrey University. He has a background in electronic and photonic engineering, telecoms product management, project management, portfolio strategy and technology watch, business consultancy and plc level corporate acquisitions. He has worked in the UK, Silicon Valley and cold places, as well as undertaking business in China, India, Western and Eastern Europe and Africa. He has recently completed a full time MSc in Nuclear Science and Technology.

 

Jamie Murray

Jamie is a partner in Cambridge Financial Partners providing Financial Director Services to SMEs. Previously he was with in plastics manufacture as Financial Director of a start-up company that became Sangenic International in 1997.  Sangenic and Jackel International, its sister company within the Mayborn Group, manufactured the Sangenic Nappy Disposal system (Diaper Genie™ in the US) and Tommee Tippee Baby brand in the UK. Jamie then moved to Cannon Avent Group, with the remit to set-up a manufacturing facility in the US, but when this company's US plans were shelved, he left to consult in finance, IT and Project Management in and around Cambridge.

 

Jannette Pallas

Janette Pallas is the Enterprise Manager at St John’s Innovation Centre. She has wide ranging experience of working with High Growth companies in Innovation Centres and with universities, advising on business development, knowledge transfer and tackling skills/development issues. She has advised pre-start, young and growing companies and received the Queen’s Award for Enterprise Promotion in 2008. In 2005, she was awarded ‘Specialist Advisor of the Year’ by the Institute of Business Advisers for her work supporting SMEs in their usage of Information and Communication Technologies. Janette has hands-on experience in business having started, grown and subsequently sold her own business.

 

Thak Patel

Thak has more than 20 years experience in the Telecom sector with over half those years spent in Germany working for Alcatel and T-Mobile.  He has a deep understanding of telecoms issues. In recent years he has returned to his roots and helped set up an enterprise THINKindia (www.thinkindia.co.uk) and more recently Joint Ventures India (www.jointventuresindia.eu) which he currently runs.  Joint Ventures India is a consultancy specialising in helping companies with market entry to India and is a very useful contact for local businesses who want to develop business relations in the sub-continent.

 

John Read

John is a veteran of the semiconductor industry having spent a lifetime in senior roles with several large companies such as Texas Instruments, Honeywell and GEC. For the last decade he has been working on a second incarnation in non-exec and chairman roles helping start-up companies-“because he enjoys it”. John likes the CETC because he is an advocate of life-long learning and by attending the events he learns about new technologies, ideas and companies outside of his own direct day-to-day experience.

 

Louise Rushworth

Louise has worked for Cambridge Network since 2008, being responsible for co-ordinating the programme of around 50 industry events the CN runs each year. She also runs their twice-yearly Cambridge Corporate Gateway event – a ‘speed dating’ event for technology scouts looking for opportunities in Cambridge.  Born in Cambridge she has worked here for small companies related to the high-tech industry helping them develop and before that worked for industry giants Powergen (in Ipswich) and Halifax (in Bristol).
