AUGUST 2003 BROADSHEET - Annual Garden Party

The Club held its annual Garden Party on 7 August in the grounds of Jesus College. It was a beautiful setting on a splendid summer’s evening.

The event itself was one of mixed emotions, as Club Chairman, Roy Cuthbert, explained. On the one hand, the Garden Party marked the end of a Club year in which we lost first our President, the distinguished Professor Roger Needham, and then our Hon Secretary, the tireless and selfless Nigel Wallace. The Club was pleased that Rosemary, Nigel’s widow, was able to attend and hear the words of tribute from Roy. On the other hand, the Garden Party also looks forwards, to the Club’s new year. As Roy explained, the Club is delighted that Walter Herriot OBE has agreed to become the new President.

Roy also thanked the four sponsors who continue to support the Club. The St John’s Innovation Centre (www.sjic.co.uk) and The Welding Institute (www.twi.co.uk) continue to provide facilities for the monthly seminars and the Club is most grateful to these two organizations. The Club also acknowledges the considerable logistical help provided by Webtec Products Limited (www.webtec.co.uk) .

In particular, Roy highlighted the generous sponsorship of NatWest (www.natwest.com), part of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group, whose financial support to the Club is so essential. Valerie Dring MBE, Associate Director at NatWest in Cambridge, kindly presented the Club with a cheque for £1,000. The Club invited Valerie to say a few words about why NatWest provides its sponsorship. Valerie explained that while NatWest has impressive ‘blue chip’ credentials (for example NatWest serves 80 of the FTSE100 companies), it is also committed to smaller businesses. NatWest seeks to help the many growing, entrepreneurial and local organizations who make up the Club’s constituency. Valerie also stressed the important networking opportunities that arise from the Club’s activities. (The Club is aware that many of the Garden Party attendees can personally attest to Valerie’s commitment to helping local businesses.) Once again, a substantial thank you to NatWest and to Valerie for their continued support.
